Effective Feedback for Business Leaders

At a leading technology firm in Africa, a critical challenge had emerged; employees often felt disconnected from the appraisal process and were unclear about how their performance was being evaluated. This gap was traced to an underdeveloped culture of feedback within the organization, where managers struggled to deliver feedback in a structured, consistent, and timely manner. The absence of clarity not only impacted employee engagement but also weakened the performance management system.

To address this, we designed and delivered a bespoke program, “Effective Feedback for Performance Improvement”, tailored to the realities of the client’s leadership team. The training, delivered virtually across three cohorts of senior managers, combined practical learning with real-world application. Over three weeks, participants explored the foundations of effective feedback, advanced techniques for handling difficult and upward conversations, and strategies for embedding feedback into everyday leadership practices. Between sessions, managers completed live assignments with their team members, applying structured models such as SBI and the Sandwich framework.

The result was a marked improvement in leader confidence and skill adoption. Managers reported feeling better equipped to give feedback that was clear, constructive, and timely, while employees responded more positively to conversations about their performance. Beyond skill development, the program began to spark a cultural shift toward greater openness, transparency, and accountability in the organization’s appraisal process.

This engagement not only strengthened the leadership team’s ability to communicate performance expectations but also laid the foundation for a sustainable feedback culture, one that supports growth, builds trust, and drives improved organizational performance.
